Skype

"Skype (pronounced /ˈskaɪp/, a word-play on type) is a software application that allows users to make voice calls and chats over the Internet. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free, while calls to both traditional landline telephones and mobile phones can be made for a fee using a debit-based user account system. Skype has also become popular for its additional features which include instant, file transfer, and video conferencing. Skype has 663 million registered users as of 2010. The network is operated by Skype Limited, which has its headquarters in Luxembourg and is minority owned by eBay. Most of the development team of Skype is situated in Tallinn, Estonia.”

That’s the official Wikipedia definition of Skype…my definition is:  the coolest thing that let me see two family members last night – I haven’t seen them since the first of December and I was a bit overwhelmed with happiness!

This afternoon, I was in line at Costco and started chatting with a lady who was behind me.  We discussed our children; I think it started when I said aloud, “I should always bring one of my kids to stand in line when I shop here.”  She thought that was a great idea and then asked me about my kids and we got to discussing the fact that the nest does grow empty and that’s okay, but when they move far away, it’s a lot more difficult.

Inevitably, the conversation came to Skype – and how wonderful it is when your family lives far away.  So, here’s the shameless plug for technological wonders of our time, if you have family who live far away and you haven’t tried Skype yet, you really should sign up and give it a try…..I am positive it will make you smile!
